The Western Australian Trade and Investment Office (ITWA) hosted a party on September 28th to introduce about 40 Vietnamese importers to the state’s food and beverage products.
The party took place at the Intercontinental Saigon Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, six months after ITWA opened its branch in the city. It also marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Australia and Vietnam, contributing to strengthening the ties and expanding the trade network between the two countries.
The event was also the first time that Ms. Jackie Jarvis MLC, Minister for Agriculture and Food, Forestry and Small Business of Western Australia, the agency that manages the community of about 1,400 businesses operating in the agricultural sector of Western Australia, had visited Vietnam.
The Vietnamese business representatives who attended the party, including representatives of the Intercontinental Hotel, part of the IHG Group, are all reputable food and beverage importers and retailers in the market, operating in the high-quality food segment.
Mr. Duc Tran, Director of ITWA Vietnam, shared at the event: “The initiatives of combining dinner with food and beverage introduction events aim to stimulate investment and trade. Tonight is an opportunity for Vietnamese diners to experience many diverse products and flavors from Western Australia.”
The dinner menu featured dishes made from Western Australia’s signature products such as rock lobster, octopus from the southwest of the state, and Truffle mushrooms. These are high-quality agricultural and aquatic products that are sustainably farmed, harvested, safe and exported to all Asian countries. In addition, many high-quality Western Australian wines were also introduced at the event.
Western Australia covers about one-third of the western territory of Australia, stretching from the tropical north to the southern coast. The geographical location, soil and climate conditions make the state biologically diverse and have a variety of agricultural forms.
The region produces a variety of food and beverages from fruits and vegetables, fresh meat and seafood, grains and nuts. Many gourmet products such as the state’s wines have won international awards.
According to Western Australia’s 2022 figures, Vietnam is currently the state’s 6th largest agricultural export market with about AUD 897 million. The main products include wheat (about AUD 499.9 million), barley (AUD 139 million), malt (AUD 96 million), beef (AUD 44 million) and lobster (AUD 30.8 million).
Conversely, Vietnam is Western Australia’s 8th largest agricultural and beverage exporter. Vietnamese exporters “score” with shrimp, crab, meat, fish, fruit and nuts, grain products and fruit juice.
Trade in agricultural products between Western Australia and Vietnam is growing. In March this year, the then Deputy Premier, Mr. Roger Cook (now Premier), attended the inauguration ceremony of ITWA in Ho Chi Minh City, marking the first time a senior leader of Western Australia has visited Vietnam since 2019.
To date, Western Australia has implemented many programs to strengthen and promote trade through events and visits by business delegations, connecting trade and investment with localities in Vietnam. Most recently, the state’s leaders signed a Memorandum of Understanding on economic, cultural, artistic, tourism and education cooperation with Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.
“Western Australia is proud to be a strong partner of Vietnamese localities and businesses. We look forward to further promoting these relationships through trade and economic partnerships,” said Minister Jackie Jarvis MLC.
As a reputable food and agricultural exporter in Western Australia, Mr. Rob Dickie, Director of Government and Industry Relations at CBH Group, said that Vietnam is one of CBH’s top 5 wheat export markets. Wheat consumption in Vietnam has been increasing gradually in recent years.
“CBH considers Vietnam a potential market as the economy is growing and the middle class is also growing. This will lead to changes in eating habits, increased protein consumption and demand for higher quality products,” said Mr. Rob Dickie, adding that in addition to wheat, the company also exports barley and other grains to Vietnam.
Although Vietnam is a relatively new market, it is considered by the Western Australian leadership to have high growth potential, especially in the context of increasing consumer demand for safe and healthy food. “This food and beverage introduction event has provided an excellent opportunity to promote Western Australia’s best export food and beverage products currently available in Vietnam,” Ms. Jackie Jarvis MLC further affirmed.
The dinner party event is also a kick-off for the “Western Australian Signature Food
